Big Three Stories for Thursday, September 24th

State Police have released the identity of the victim killed in a hit and run incident. 38-year-old Benjamin Lewis from Houston, Texas was discovered in the 37-hundred block of Verot School Road between Fortune Road and Highway 92. State Police believe the vehicle came from the north bound lane of Verot School Road. Lewis was walking along the south bound side. His body was found Wednesday morning by a passing motorist. Investigators think Lewis may have been hit the night before. Neighbors say the rural stretch of road is very dangerous.

 In St. Martin Parish, there are mixed feelings about an assembly at Cecilia High School.
  Black male students were the only ones forced to attend.
     Cecilia Principal Anthony Polotzola says that's because the last seven fights were among black males. He says he wanted to tell them if they continue down this path of violence most of them will end up in jail.

Mosquito numbers have increased by the thousands here in Acadiana.
Last week's tropical downpours dumped more rain than hurricane Ike areas south of Interstate10  recieving 5-inches or more.
      Last year's storms brought federal funding through a FEMA declaration but this year the funds are not available and parishes are being forced to front the costs.
    Spraying has been stepped up to 20 hours a day.
     Aerial spraying is already happening in Iberia Parish and may soon start in Lafayette, Acadia and St. Mary. 
Remember to remove standing water around your home and consider placing screens on windows and doors. Also, wear long sleeves and pants and insect repellent with DEET.
