BESE weighing changes to public school financing

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The state's top school board is considering proposals for changing the way it divvies up $3.5 billion in annual funding for public schools.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is hearing recommendations Tuesday from a task force that looked at the school funding formula.

The task force suggested increased spending on technical training courses and special education students. But the suggestions don't go as far as teacher unions, special education advocates and others would like.

Discussion about the task force recommendations will be part of BESE's monthly committee hearings. The board won't devise its final school formula proposal until March, and then the formula must be submitted to lawmakers for consideration.
