The LSU Eunice softball team advanced to play a Friday afternoon contest against Jones County Junior College with a trip to the National Championship game on the line after a comeback, 4-3 victory over Des Moines Area Community College earlier Friday.
Against Des Moines, the Lady Bengals (61-2) finished with just five hits, but got a pair of back-to-back big hits to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
"We kept our composure. We struggled all but one inning, that one inning we caught up to her. The key to the game was we had one big inning and played good defense. Destin really threw a great game and kept them off balance the whole game," head coach Andy Lee said.
Down 3-0, LSU Eunice saw Emily Nolan cut into the deficit with a two-run single before Destin Vicknair sent a two-run homer over the center field wall moments later to give the Lady Bengals the lead.
Des Moines plated three runs in the top of the first inning with only one hit leaving the infield, adding three infield singles and an error to jump ahead.
Codi Covington, Brooklynn Clark (double) and Caitlen Blanchard all added one hit in addition to the one hit apiece from Nolan and Vicknair.
Vicknair grabbed her 28th victory of the season in the circle, allowing three runs (two earned) and eight hits while striking out five Des Moines batters in her complete game win.
The Lady Bengals will now take on regional rival Jones County Junior College at 4 p.m. in the semifinals. The winner will advance to the National Championship game tomorrow, while the loser will have to win three games Saturday to win the title.
