Behind the Scenes of Festival International Set Up

The 26th annual Festival International de Louisiane is only a day away, but setting everything up has been in the works since Sunday.

Tents and stages, merchandise and more are almost all in place for Festival weekend. Area companies come back year after year doing the heavy lifting and technical work to prepare for dozens of unique musical performances.

"They've been doing it for 25 years some of them, some you know probably the shortest amount of time probably about 10 years the whole team has been together," said Festival International Executive Director Dana Baker.

Aside from paid workers, more than 2,000 volunteers are needed to set up and keep Festival running. Volunteer Kenneth Reviere said his whole family decided to volunteer this year.

"A couple of members have done it before but this year was the first year that we were all able to come together to pitch in," said Reviere.

Volunteers do everything from setting up, to selling merchandise and even moving barricades around downtown. On Tuesday Reviere and his sons were loading up merchandise in preparation for Festival.

"It's really fun, if you think about what you're doing it for, it's great," said Reviere.

And it's not just locals who volunteer, Baker said they've got volunteers from Canada, Minnesota, New York, and Mexico.

"They're coming here to come to Festival but while they're here they're going to volunteer as a way to give back. It's kind of interesting, we meet a lot of people that way," explained Baker.

And there's still time to volunteer, you can find more information on the website Volunteers can also sign up Wednesday at 4:00pm at the Volunteer Center located on Lee Street between Convent and Jefferson. Baker said if you decide to volunteer later in the week, just go by the Volunteer Center and you can still help out any time during Festival.
