BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board is forming a school safety task force to identify and implement procedures to ensure schools are safe from violence.
Board member Jerry Arbour requested the creation of the task force at this week's school board meeting, citing recent incidents involving studentsd bringing guns to school.
Arbour suggested that permanent metal detectors in schools may be necessary, but said the school system can't afford that expense right now.
The Advocate reports school board Vice-President Tarvald Smith will lead the task force and will select its members. The members are expected to include other board members, school system staff and community members. No date has been set for its first meeting.
