Basketball Brings Small Town to Life

Basketball means everything to one rural town in Acadia Parish, whose team is going to the state championships.

The Midland High Rebels won their semi-finals game Tuesday night, so Friday night they will be competing for the state title.

The whole town of Midland will be rooting for their team because this is the most exciting season they have had in over 40 years. The last time they won the big game was in 1977.

"It's a sense of pride, we don't have a lot else really around, so it's the biggest thing in town," says coach Todd Briley.

"We're a rural area, but this shows a rural community can keep up with the big metropolitan areas just the same," says alumna Dana Richard.

The players say everyone has shown tremendous support.

"The fans and everyone they're all into it, happy for us and its beautiful out here," says player Colby Gantt.

Those fans are what gets the players going.

"It's exciting, it's adrenaline; we're pumped and ready to play," says player Miles Prejean.

The championship game will be at the Cajundome Friday eveing at 7:30pm.

Tickets are 10 dollars and can only be purchased in Lafayette.
