Basile Police report a tragic end to a confrontation in the woods Wednesday evening near the home of a Basile man, who apparently turned his weapon on himself after refusing to comply with officers' requests to surrender his weapon.
Basile Police Chief Allen Ivory, Jr., said the incident began about 5:20 p.m. when David Michael Aucoin, 46, was reported by family members to have been hallucinating and acting irrationally as he sat on his porch with another family member. Aucoin reportedly bolted from his porch and into the woods with a loaded weapon.
Dispatched immediately to the scene. Basile Police Department employed the services of Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Department, La. Wildlife and Fisheries, and Eunice Police Department, and a K-9 Unit because of the close proximity of the woods to other area residences.
Aucoin did not respond to law enforcement attempts to communicate with him and the perimeter was secured. After a lengthy standoff about 80 yards from his residence, Aucoin refused to surrender his weapon and emerge from the woods.
At approximately 8:30 p.m., Aucoin turned his weapon on himself and was fatally wounded from a self-inflicted gun shot. The Acadian Ambulance responded, but Aucoin was determined to be deceased. The Evangeline Parish Coroner's office confirmed Aucoin's demise about 10:15 p.m.
One Evangeline Parish Deputy was injured and the incident and was transported to Mercy Medical Center, in Ville Platte, for injuries unrelated to a weapon. The deputy was treated and released.
Basile Police Department said the investigation continues.
