Ask Joey 10/09/13

Parish President Joey Durel can be seen on GMA every Thursday around 6:40am to answer your questions. This week Joey Durel answered the following questions, please watch the video attached to hear the answers.

1)From Erica: My son and I visited the downtown library for the first time last weekend after a trip to the science museum. I was taken aback by the condition (and the smell) of the library! I think about the posh library on my side of town (South Regional) and wonder how this could be. Is the budget getting evenly distributed?

The Jefferson Street Branch is our temporary downtown location while we renovate the 40-year-old Main Library. Once complete, the Main Library will be as spectacular as our new regional libraries on Johnston Street and in Carencro on University Avenue. The new Main Library will have a children's storytelling room, a meeting room, study rooms on each floor and a genealogy & local history room. The public areas will span three floors and will include an impressive collection of books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, video games and public computers. We expect to be preparing for our grand re-opening next year at this time.

To allow for the renovations and asbestos removal at the Main Library, we moved temporarily into the building on Jefferson Street in 2011. We were fortunate to find a space in Downtown Lafayette that was large enough to house our temporary library, which just happens to be one of Lafayette's older and more charming downtown buildings.

We also have a warehouse to store the books and materials that don't fit in this temporary library, and patrons wishing to check out those items can request to have them sent to whichever library location is most convenient to them.

We're sorry the viewer had a less than ideal visit to the library. Director Sona Dombourian is checking into what may have caused the smells and poor conditions described. Please feel free to contact her at 261-5781 so we can make sure those concerns are addressed.
