Arrest Made in Chastant Murder Case

Press Release: Sheriff Louis Ackal stated that on December 13, 2010 at approximately 9:00 a.m. the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office received a report of a missing person. It was reported to the Sheriff's Office that Dr. Robert Chastant (DOB 12/23/1950 Height 5'11" Weight 195) was due to report to his office on the December 13, at 8:30 a.m., which he did not. Since then, his vehicle was recovered at a Wal-Mart shopping center in New Iberia.
Detectives and uniformed officers conducted a search for Dr. Chastant at his Horse Stable on Sugarmill Road. The deceased body of a male matching the description of Dr. Chastant was located on the property. The Iberia Parish Coroner's Office took custody of the body and is also conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Detectives were able to locate the person who had driven Dr. Chastant's vehicle to a Wal-Mart in New Iberia. Detectives learned that the suspect was an employee of Dr. Chastant's at his Horse Stable. After interviewing and interrogating the suspect detectives believed that the, Ismael Viera (DOB 05/31/1989 of 2607 Bayou Bend Rd, New Iberia) had murdered Dr. Chastant after a physical and verbal altercation between the two.
Viera was transported to the Iberia Parish Jail where he was booked in on 2nd degree murder. No bond has been set on Viera thus far.
