A break in a St. Mary Parish murder investigation. Sheriff's deputies arrested 38-year-old Darby Mack Frickey Monday night around 8:00 pm on charges of second degree murder of Mark Berthelot.
Berthelot's body was found in a cane field off Highway 317 about three weeks ago. And even though there is one suspect in custody, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said this case isn't closed yet.
Hebert said Frickey's name came up during their initial investigation and that led to deputies questioning Frickey. Hebert said Frickey was an acquaintance of Berthelot's.
"It turned out through admissions that there was an altercation involving the two which resulted in the death of Mark Berthalot," explained Hebert.
While the Sheriff said Frickey admitted to causing fatal injury to Berthelot, he's still not releasing the exact cause of death or what led to that deadly altercation. We also still don't know in what condition Berthelot's body was found.
"We just don't want to conclude yet or divulge too much information because there are still several people we want to talk to. But we are very confident that we're going to bring this to a full closure real shortly," said Hebert.
Hebert said the investigation continues and he's not ruling out additional suspects. Meanwhile Frickey remains in the St. Mary Parish Jail, no bond has been set.
