Alexandria to hire 10 student summer workers

ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Ten high school and college students will work for the city of Alexandria this summer.

The Town Talk reports that an ordinance passed last week will let it hire the student workers through the Rapides Business and Career Solutions Center.

Assistant City Attorney Alaina Mire says the students will work in various departments throughout the city, such as the legal, planning, public works and utility departments. They'll work 32 hours a week, for $8 an hour.

She hopes it will get them interested in their city.

Mire says the six- to eight-week program will cost $24,000.

Several council members said they'd like to expand the program next year.
