Alabama man sentenced to 2 years in prison for copyright violation

United States Attorney Stephanie A. Finley announced today that Johnson Augustus Powell, 54, of Huntsville, Ala., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard T. Haik to 24 months in prison and three years of supervised release for copyright infringement. He was also ordered to pay $7,500 restitution to the Motion Picture Association of America.

According to evidence presented at the guilty plea on November 12, 2013, Louisiana State Police stopped Powell's vehicle August 10, 2011, on Interstate 10. During a search of the vehicle, State Police found 1,463 counterfeit DVD movies and 1,225 counterfeit music CDs. Powell surrendered the illegal materials and admitted that he was selling them for profit.
