Adults have an alternative for completing school

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - When Devon Benoit realized high school wasn't for him, he chose an alternative path by enrolling in the WorkReady U program in Lafourche Parish.

The program is housed at South Central Louisiana Technical College in Thibodaux and helps adults earn a high school equivalency diploma while gaining the skills necessary for a future career.

The Daily Comet reports Benoit has been enrolled in the program since October 2013 and plans study petroleum technology at Fletcher Technical Community College in Schriever once he secures his equivalency diploma. Fletcher allows students to work while attending classes in a seven-day-on, seven-day-off schedule.

Students learn basic education skills, such as reading, writing, and math, get credential preparation and other services. A placement test helps instructors determine individual students' academic levels.
