Acadiana Special Olympians bring home medals from New Jersey

Numerous Acadiana residents competed at this summer's 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in Princeton, New Jersey.

Special Olympics Louisiana selected 16 athletes, 10 unified partners and 8 coaches from Acadiana to attend the third Special Olympics USA Games held from June 14 to 21. These selected Special Olympians represented Louisiana among a total of 56 athletes, 24 unified partners and 21 coaches from the entire state who were chosen to attend.

Listed according to sport, name, age, type of participation, and city, these were the members of the Acadiana Delegation:

Team Louisiana secured 47 gold medals, 36 silver medals, 34 bronze medals, 43 fourth place ribbons, 10 fifth place ribbons, 6 sixth place ribbons, 3 seventh place ribbons and 3 eighth place ribbons. That is a grand total of 182 awards. The Acadiana Area alone garnered a total of 20 Gold medals, 5 Silver medals, 9 Bronze medals, 9 fourth place ribbons, 2 fifth place ribbons, 1 seventh place ribbon, 1 eighth place ribbon, and 1 participation ribbon, totaling 48 awards.

Below are the results for local athletes, coaches, and partners from the Acadiana Area:

  • Adam Gilmore with the aquatics team took home 2 Gold medals in the 50 YD Butterfly and 50 YD Freestyle, and 2 Bronze medals in the 4x25 YD Medley Relay and the 50 YD Backstroke.
  • Kevon Christmas (Unified Partner), Patty Lagron (Coach), Arnold Gregoire, and Jason Journet took home the Silver medal with the unified basketball team.
  • Katie Botts (Coach), Cornelius Bush (Unified Partner), Albert Friou, Roy Menard, Tyler Reaux (Unified Partner), Brodie Russo (Unified Partner), Caleb Russo (Unified Partner), Rebekah Russo (Coach), Camrin Sandoz, Ted Sandoz (Coach), and Scott Smith took home the Gold medal in Unified Flag Football.
  • Team Louisiana, coached in athletics by Landa Gann and Mike Rhodes, performed well. Colt Harrison took home the Gold medal in the 100m Run, Shot Put, and the 4 x 100m Relay. He also won a 7th place ribbon in the 200m Run. A'Nylla Alexander won a Silver medal in the 200m Run, two 4th place ribbons in the 4 x 100m Relay and the Running Long Jump, and also an 8th place ribbon in the 100m Run. Hannah Mire won a Silver medal in the Shot Put, a Bronze medal in the 200m Run, a 4th place ribbon in the 100m Run, and a Participation ribbon in the Mini Javelin. Seth Vice won 2 Bronze medals in the Mini Javelin and Shot Put, 4th place in the 100m Run, and 5th place in the 200m Run.
  • Coaches Cindy Landry and Stephanie Manuel led Team Louisiana in tennis. Keyonna August won Bronze in Tennis Singles. Christopher Blanchard won Gold in Tennis Singles and a 4th place ribbon in Tennis Doubles Unified Team. Jamarcus Dennis also won Gold in Tennis Singles and Bronze in Tennis Doubles Unified Team.
  • Unified partner Connor Hargrave took home a 4th place ribbon in Tennis Doubles Unified Team. Another Unified Partner, Colin Sandoz, took home Bronze in Tennis Doubles Unified Team. Chandra Vallere also took home Gold in Tennis Singles and 4th place in Tennis Doubles Unified Team.
  • Betty LaSalle, a Unified Partner in Bowling, won Bronze in Bowling Unified Team and 5th in Bowling Unified Doubles. Jerry LaSalle, another Unified Partner won Gold in Bowling Unified Team and 4th in Bowling Unified Doubles. Joshua Racca won 2 Gold medals in Male Unified Bowling Team and Bowling Singles. He also won 4th place in Bowling Unified Doubles.
  • Tristen Louviere, a Unified Partner on the golf team, won a Gold medal in Alternate Shot Team Play.
