Acadian Ambulance Hurricane Preps

Lafayette-based Acadian Ambulance, which serves over half the state, is in hurricane preparation mode.

Vice President of Operations, Jerry Romero, says they are more ready than ever.

"We've really streamlined our plan - we're using the command system the federal government uses, we make sure we have the supplies we need, and our communications are up to speed," he says.

Acadian started kicking into high gear since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

"That was trying times because a lot of communications were down, we had redundant systems in place," says Donnie Simon, an Operations Supervisor.

New equipment includes radios and push-to-talk devices.

Acadian is also ready for an increase in evacuations.

"Providing additional surge capacity to be able to evacuate all these patients-- we do work with other partners, the state brings in additional ambulances as well as the federal government, when the contract is activated," says Romero.
