Lafayette Police are still tracking down the suspect in a shooting over the weekend. The shooting happened around 2:30 Sunday morning at the Taco Bell on Congress Street. Police say someone shot two men who were standing in the parking lot. A 23-year-old man was hot in the back and leg. He was released from the hospital. The other, 19-year-old Frederick Joseph the Third was shot in the back. He later died at a hospital.
"I believe Fred is in a better place, a good place."
Frederick Joseph Junior is in disbelief, as he clutches a photo of his son, 19-year-old Frederick Joseph the Third. He was known as "little Fred" and was a loving and caring person.
"He was focused. Determined to be successful in life. He was on the dean's list," said Junior.
Joseph's son graduated from Westgate High School in New Iberia last year. He was a star athlete, playing both football and basketball. He was home for the summer and in the fall would have returned to North Dakota State College of Science where he was on a basketball scholarship and was studying engineering. His dream was to one day play for the New Orleans Hornets.
"He told me he was ready to go back to school. He only came home to see the family."
The family tells KATC, he was at Taco Bell just to get a quick bite to eat. They say he was a good person and didn't have any enemies. They don't know why someone would do this.
"It hurts. I wish it were me," said Junior.
Frederick Joseph the Third leaves behind an eight-month-old son. Family members say he couldn't wait to watch his son grow up. The family is hoping for answers and that police find whoever is responsible.
"All I ask is that God's will be done," added his father.
