This weekend families can spend quality time together while raising money for a good cause. The 6th Annual Family Adventure Day is Saturday. It's a community fundraiser put on by Healing House.
The Healing House is just that, a place where children and teens heal after losing a parent or sibling. The non-profit organization knows the importance of making memories with loved ones.
"The families at Healing House always say if they could just have more day with the person they loved that died," said Kim Thackston Healing House Development Director. "If we really just want to have a day where they can spend together and create some new memories."
That's why they've partnered with more than 30 local businesses like Big Boy Toys helping families make those lasting memories possible.
"We're going to set up a remote control car track so the kids can practice racing remote control cars so it will be a lot of fun," said Owner Jeremy Truxillo.
With a map in hand, families take on Lafayette and visit as many places as possible. One adventure is AOC Community Media where families will be able to record a newscast or weather report in front of the green screen.
"We want them to see that it's not scary to be in front of the camera and really they can just have fun and learn a little bit about technology and digital media," said Nancy Judice.
This year Healing House has added several new activities including yoga and boxing classes and Divers Destination, where families can learn to scuba dive.
"Of course we have our favorites that are coming back, canoeing, planet ice where can go ice skating for an hour," said Thackston. "We have activities for the younger children as well as activities for teenagers so it's fun to be silly and spend the day together."
The event kicks off this Saturday from 9-5p.m. At the end all families who go to at least four locations will also be eligible for a big raffle prize. To register visit our website healing-house.org or call 234-0443.
