The step-father of a murdered college student is in jail, and named a person of interest in her death.
The body of 20-year-old Skylar Credeur was found by family members yesterday afternoon in her home in Rayne. Her death was first called suspicious, but then classified as murder. The coroner said today he believes the cause of her death was drowning.
Credeur was a 2011 graduate of Rayne High School, and was currently a student at UL. Following her death, deputies arrested Credeur's step-father Kerry Bertrand as a person of interest.
According to court documents, Credeur said she had been threatened by her step-father in the past, saying in court documents "He threatened to kill me and hide my body in a swamp."
Back on August 13th, Credeur filed a restraining order against her step-father the day after he was released from jail. He was in jail on molestation charges, and his release was due to paperwork not being filed in a timely manner.
Credeur's restraining order was granted, and then her mother's was granted two days later, ordering Bertrand to stay away from their Rayne home, and the other four children as well.
"We did conduct an investigation involving Bertrand earlier this year. May 31st of this year Louisiana State Police did place him under arrest for child molestation. He subsequently was booked into the Acadia Parish Jail," Trooper Stephen Hammons said.
In court documents, Skylar says he went to their family home the night he was released and made threats, which led her to seek court protection from him.
Then last week, formal charges were drawn up by the DA's office, and deputies went out to serve the warrant and bring Bertrand back to jail.
The District Attorney's office says when they found Bertrand at the motel he was staying at, he took off running. Skylar was murdered five days later.
Bertrand is now back in the Acadia Parish jail, although not formally charged with the murder. Deputies say he's only a person of interest. In regards to his arrest, he's being held for allegedly violating all five of the protective orders against him, as well as the molestation charge.
Friends and former classmates of Credeur are planning a memorial service for her on Suday at Rayne High School's gym at 2 p.m.
