KENNER, La. (AP) - A New Orleans man was arrested Saturday after a road rage incident in which police said he shot into a pickup truck and hit a 10-year-old boy.
David Sean Jackson, 26, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property, illegal possession of a firearm by a felon, illegal carrying of weapons and possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine and other traffic. The New Orleans man was on parole in New Orleans for distribution of drugs and felony possession of a firearm.
Kenner police spokesman Sgt. Brian McGregor said the incident started Saturday afternoon on Interstate 10, when a 50-year-old male driver of a pickup passed Jackson's Acura and cut him off. Nola.comThe Times-Picayune reports Jackson was driving the Acura with his two sons - a five-month-old and a 6-year-old - and their 25-year-old mother, in the car, police said
Police say the car and truck passed each other repeatedly until Jackson pulled alongside and fired multiple times, striking the 10-year-old boy. A bullet grazed the boy's face near his nose, and bullet fragments pierced his sinus cavity, McGregor said.
The driver of the truck then rammed the Acura and pursued Jackson off the interstate, eventually hitting the Acura a second time. Both vehicles were stopped by Kenner police. The driver of the pickup was not immediately charged.
The child underwent surgery Saturday at University Hospital to remove fragments from his sinus cavity.
