KATC went on the air in the fall of 1962 as an affiliate of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), and celebrated its fortieth anniversary in 2002. Each week, more than 377,000 people tune into KATC-TV3 for local and national news, talk/variety and game shows, soap operas, information and entertainment, sports, movies, children’s, and public affairs programming. KATC-TV-3 is carried on cable systems throughout Southwest Louisiana to viewers in Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes. KATC-TV3’s live local newscasts, “Acadiana’s Newschannel” at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. have won numerous awards, including multiple Associated Press awards for the Best Local Newscast in the Acadiana market. StormTeam3’s Power Doppler 3000, the most powerful radar on the Gulf Coast, helps keep Acadiana families safe from severe weather. Providing live, real time, information from storm systems it scans the horizon from a 14-foot satellite dish towering over 75-feet in the air and instantly reports back to the StormTeam3 Weather Lab. The only other television station with a radar as powerful is in Tampa, FL. For more information, visit our Power Doppler 3000 page. KATC-TV3 is committed to the community. With the “Safe Families” initiative, KATC-TV3 uses the airwaves to provide important information on subjects like health, crime, consumer protection, and weather safety. KATC-TV joins with local law enforcement agencies, hospitals and other organizations to host annual Safe Families events that heighten public awareness about safety and promote positive interaction with the people we serve. The station has established advisory councils throughout Acadiana parishes, to provide important feedback and oversight. KATC-TV3 is owned by the Evening Post Publishing Company, which also owns television stations in Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Montana and Texas, daily and weekly newspapers in South Carolina, North Carolina and Texas, and an English-language daily newspaper in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It also owns a Florida-based subsidiary that distributes newspaper feature material worldwide and a Georgetown County, SC company that owns and manages Southern-pine timberlands.
