    STAR readers rewarded at Mermentau Elem.

    Today, Mermentau Elementary is rewarding their A.R. (Accelerated Readers) STAR students with a water slide.

    Each nine weeks students have to read books and take comprehension tests to earn points and reach a set goal for their grade level to attain STAR reader level.

    The school, a campus of only 150 students, has 58 STAR Readers. The STAR readers have read a total of about 6,500 books this year.

    Rayne Juvenile Arrested in Connection with Burglary

    Rayne police have arrested a juvenile in connection with a house burglary. Officers say the male broke into a house in the 500 block of South Cunningham Street and stole over $1,000 in items. Officers also say an investigation led them to the suspect, and a search of his house turned up the stolen goods. The juvenile has been booked into the Lafayette Parish Juvenile Detention Center.

    Man Charged with Attempted Burglary, Resisting Police

    A Rayne man is in jail after being accused of trying to break into a house. Police say neighbors saw 40-year old Kenny Menard trying to enter the residence. Menard allegedly resisted officers when they arrived. Police say they used reasonable force to restrain him. Menard is charged with attempted burglary, resisting an officer, battery on a peace officer, and criminal damage to property.

    Rayne police have arrested a doctor's assistant for allegedly forging prescriptions. Authorities say 30-year old Jamie Pitts used her access to prescription pads to commit a felony. She is charged with nine counts of forgery of a controlled dangerous substance. Pitts also faces additional charges in other jurisdictions. The case remains under investigation.

    Mother's bond reduced to $40,000

    The Rayne mother whose children died in a house fire has been released from jail on a $40,000 bond. An Acadia Parish Grand Jury indicted 26-year-old Shaqueta McDade on four counts of second degree murder on May 1st.

    Update: 18 wheeler shuts down US 90 in Acadia Parish

    US 90 remains closed between Rayne and Duson due to an overturned 18-wheeler. Recovery crews now estimate the roadway will be opened around 7:00 pm. Traffic is being detoured westbound at LA 719 north to Quaterpole Road, west to LA 98, south to Llama Road to US 90. Eastbound traffic is being detoured south on Leroy Breaux Road to LA 720 west to LA 719 north.

    The 18 wheeler and trailer on US 90 in Acadia Parish has been removed off the road, but the heavy equipment it was carrying is still on the road. A crane will be used to remove it. Until it's removed, US 90 is closed in Acadia Parish between Rayne and Duson.
